Brawling Mets Bring It Down to the Wire

Nail-biter looms as Mets smash Marlins 13-0 amid bench-clearing rows

(Newser) – The Mets pulled out of their five-game tailspin in a huge way yesterday, dismantling the Florida Marlins 13-0 on John Maine's near no-hitter as the benches cleared twice for a brawl. With the Phillies' loss to the Nationals, the Mets are again tied for first place in the Nation League East, reports the New York Times.

The fights came in the fifth inning, first after the Marlins pitcher threw behind Luis Castillo, and minutes later when Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo took a swing at Jose Reyes. If the Mets and Phillies both lose or both win in today's season finale, they would come face-to-face in a playoff game tomorrow to battle for the NL East crown.
