Red Sox Clinch Best Record in Baseball

Posted Sep 30, 07 4:31 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – J.D. Drew's clutch home run last night secured Boston's 6-4 victory over the Twins, which in turn ensured that the Red Sox will go down as having the top regular-season record in 2007. This distinction allowed the Sox to choose the longer, 8-day schedule for their playoff series against the Angels, reports MLB.com.

If the Sox lose today and the Indians win, the teams would have identical records—but Boston's 5-2 record against Cleveland would break such a tie. Spreading five games over eight days will allow for three-man starting rotations, meaning that Boston can keep some of its more unpredictable pitchers in the bullpen. The American League Division series starts Wednesday in Boston.
