Pope's Preacher Addresses Anti-Semitism Remark Backlash

Raniero Cantalamessa says he's sorry 'if I hurt feelings'

(Newser) – The Vatican official who compared the fallout from the church's alleged cover-up of child sex-abuse cases to the "more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism" has acknowledged the subsequent firestorm of criticism but stopped short of apologizing. "If—and it was not my intention to do so—I hurt the sensitivities of Jews and victims of paedophilia, I am truly sorry and I ask for forgiveness," Raniero Cantalamessa said in an interview with an Italian newspaper.

Benedict was in the room for the Q&A with a reporter from Corriere della Sera, notes Reuters. Cantalamessa defended his boss, saying, " Not only did the pope not inspire me but, like everyone else, heard my words for the first time like everyone else during the liturgy in the basilica." Although he's the preacher to the papal household, Cantalamessa isn't part of the githt-knit inner circle advising the pontiff, reports the AP. Is that the same anti-Semitism written into Canon law for centuries and enthusiastically enforced by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (of which Ratzinger was head), previously known as the Inquisition?

Wow, I don't know how they keep a straight face. Their gall is simply breathtaking.

I can't wait to see if they can top that clanger.

Uh, yeah, he am sorry if the kids who got raped and the Jews have a problem with what he said. It's all good, he is a priest so it is an easy fix, forgive him. Sure no problem, I am sure no one has an issue forgiving his sorry ass, right? I don't see why they would, well.....besides the whole raping kids thing. Oh and the reducing the death of the Jews to a defense of raping kids. Come to think about it, this guy needs to be bitch slapped.

Really, who cares about your remarks? Probably the Jews trying to get the Vatican to give a nod to their being wiped out in WWII cared more. Too bad they can't say it. I'll say it for them--you miserable fuck--helped no Jew in '38 but worry about anti semitism today--gee, how swell. Almost like Churchill and FDR who knew your plight too, but--hey, if we admit you are starving in Dachua in '42 then we admit that we broke enigma. Churchill--if there were a hell, and there isn't, but if there were--he'd be there for Coventry. FDR would be there for Dresdan. Hitler and Stalin already there, but, my didn't the nice people do some bad things? I guess I mean that being human--means admitting that your shit stinks, too.
