US Women Take Third in Cup

Overpowers Norway in consolation match

Share

(Newser) – Well, it’s better than nothing. The US women’s soccer team demolished Norway 4-1 yesterday to take third place in the women’s World Cup. Abby Wambach scored in the 30th and 46th minutes, giving the women a lead they never relinquished. It’s a small consolation after the brutal 4-0 loss to Brazil that kept the top-ranked US out of the finals.

That's prompting calls for coach Greg Ryan’s head after the loss, the worst ever for the women’s side, which followed a controversial goalie switch that ultimately led to the dismissal of starter Hope Solo. “These past couple days have been real emotional. It's never easy losing,” Wambach said. “Our team showed today that we have serious character. We are women of heart.”
