(Newser) – Toyota stalled on US recall pledges and treated the same safety problem differently in the US than in Europe and Canada, new documents released by the automaker show. “The time to hide on this one is over. We need to come clean,” an American Toyota executive urged the company in January, after it had allegedly spent four months hiding information about defects from the US government, the New York Times reports.

Toyota promised American regulators last fall that it would issue a recall—but instead only announced a safety warning. On the same day the company told European countries it was redesigning its cars for the European market, and offered information about how to repair sticking gas pedals and sudden engine surges or acceleration. A week later Toyota issued a recall in Canada—months before the American recall.
