Webb Spins Diamondbacks Win Over Cubs

Posted Oct 4, 07 2:57 AM CDT in US Sports

(Newser) – Lou Piniella wanted to make sure Carlos Zambrano could start a possible game four. What he didn't want was to see Carlos Marmol turn a 1-1 tie into a 2-1 deficit only four pitches into his relief outing. But that's what happened when rookie third baseman Mark Reynolds homered in the 7th, which was the difference in a 3-1 win for Arizona over the Cubs in the NLDS playoff opener.

"He probably could have gone another inning. We're bringing him back Sunday on three days' rest," the AP quoted Piniella saying about his removal of Zambrano after throwing only 85 pitches. "I took a shot with my bullpen. It didn't work today. They've done it all year." The Reynolds' home run helped make a winner of Brandon Webb, who held the Cubs to only one run in 7 innings work.
