Orlando-area woman says she made her point about smut

(Newser) – The Florida woman holding her local library's Gossip Girl books hostage because she deemed their content "really inappropriate" has returned them. "I feel like I had done my part to help focus attention on this," Tina Harden tells the Orlando Sentinel, which broke the story yesterday. Since then, the library has received donations of replacement books and money to buy new copies.

Does this mean I have permission to hold all Twilight movies, Boy Bands, TV reality shows and Top 40 "rap" and "punk" acts hostage, because they're all contributing to the dumbing down of already-very-dumb America? I mean, things that make you stupid are "inappropriate," right?

(NEWSER) - A Florida county's library system has banned the erotic-fiction 50 Shades of Grey trilogy in light of its "perceived pornographic nature," a spokesman tells NBC Miami . Brevard County's 17 libraries had ordered 19 copies of the three EL James books, and there was a waiting list of readers. After reviews emerged, however, the library system's director decided to get rid of them as soon as checked-out copies had been returned—even though "we know it's a national phenomenon," the rep noted. Kindle Users Borrow 300K eBooks Monthly

Ebook publishing program expands lending library

(NEWSER) - Amazon is seeing big results from a new ebook-lending program. Its new KDP Select program, which allows independent writers and publishers to cash in on borrowed books, saw 300,000 borrowed titles last month. The program, allotted $500,000 last month, provided authors with $1.70 per borrow, with the top 10 KDP Select writers scoring some $70,000, TechCrunch reports. This month, the fund has grown to $700,000, the company says, thanks to the Kindle Lending Library's success. More»

Amazon Opens Lending Library for Kindle

(NEWSER) - Starting today, Kindle users who are Amazon Prime subscribers—and no one else—will have access to Amazon’s new ebook lending library. The library won’t be available to those using Kindle apps on other devices, and it’s opening with a fairly small selection of books: just over 5,000, the Wall Street Journal reports. Richard Whitehead uncovered a century-old controversy when doing some research for his new position as one of the library's trustees: a book banned in 1906 because it contained naked images. Sounds like small potatoes now, but the trustees at the time—the town clerk, a minister, and an undertaker—found the illustrations in Mark Twain's Eve's Diary too risque, reports the New York Times .
