Phillies Take Loss, Face History

Posted Oct 4, 07 6:20 PM CDT in Sports US

(Newser) – The rally towels vanished in Philly today as Colorado's Kaz Matsui clocked a grand slam and the Rockies won 10-5, staking a 2-0 series lead. Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick gave up 5 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings and left the bases loaded for Matsui's go-ahead dinger. Phillies' leader Jimmy Rollins made up for yesterday, accounting for 4 runs, including the Phils' first ever postseason leadoff homer.

Both bullpens struggled, but Colorado's bats won out: Yorvit Torrealba clocked a 2-RBI double in the 6th, and Matsui knocked in 1 more with a triple. A Ryan Howard solo bomb in the 7th was all the Phils could muster in attempting a comeback. Now the Phillies will face history in Colorado: no team has come back from an 0-2 series deficit in the current NLDS format.
