She Views Life From Behind a New Face

(Newser) – Isabelle Dinoire, the French woman who in November 2005 received the world's first partial face transplant, has taught herself how to eat and speak again, but what she really wants to learn, the Guardian reports, is how to kiss. In a new book published in France yesterday, Dinoire describes her slow adjustment to living with another woman's face after surgery.

With no sensory capabilities in her mouth, she had to eat in front of a mirror and be careful of burning herself. She discovered a hair on her chin, not her own blond color but brunette, like her donor's. Dinoire is happy and proud of her new face—but she keeps her original ID card to remember her old one.
