And now we wait. BP's chief executive says the "top kill" operation that got under way this afternoon is going as planned, reports the AP. He reiterated it will be at least a day before engineers know whether 50,000 barrels of thick mud on the way will do the trick, and he said the live video feed—which so far hasn't shown any big changes—probably won't be much help between now and then.

"I'm sure many of you have been watching the plume," said Tony Hayward. "All I can say is it is unlikely to give us any real indication of what is going on. Either increases or decreases are not an indicator of either success or failure at this time." If the plan fails, Florida Sen. Bill Nelson tells the Washington Post that the US must take over.
