Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and Russian prosecutors know the identity of the assassin who gunned down journalist and outspoken Kremlin critic Anna Politkovskaya, whose murder caused international outrage a year ago. Since her death nine people have been arrested, but the gunman and the person who ordered the killing remain at large, the New York Times reports.

Some fear a thorough investigation is being blocked by the Kremlin. “She was killed because she was uncompromising and brave,” said a friend of Politkovskaya at a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of her death. “She struggled against violations of law, lies, and violence. Lies and violence rule this country.” (More Anna Politkovskaya stories.)
