Now politicians are getting into trouble for fudging other people's war records. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, complaining to the Arizona Republic about Nazi comments during the immigration debate, said this: "Knowing that my father died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany, that I lost him when I was 11 because of that . . . and then to have them call me Hitler's daughter. It hurts. It's ugliness beyond anything I've ever experienced."
The Arizona Guardian, however, follows up by reporting that her father worked in a munitions depot in Nevada during the war and died of lung cancer in 1955. The governor's office says her father died from fumes he inhaled at the factory and that she didn't mean to imply he served as a soldier. "She wasn't embellishing the story at all." Meanwhile, Senate candidate Mark Kirk of Illinois has acknowledged a second misstatement about his service record, reports Greg Sargent's Plum Line blog at the Washington Post.
