Cardinals Hold Their Breath Over La Russa

Posted Oct 9, 07 5:47 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Tony La Russa is still mum on whether he will return to the St. Louis Cardinals for a 13th season, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. While the third-winningest manager in baseball history discusses his plans with his family, Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt is becoming more antsy, and emphasizing that the decision process is "not open-ended."

La Russa has said that he does want to manage somewhere, but his options beyond St. Louis may be limited. The hapless Pirates need a manager, and the Yankees may, if George Steinbrenner makes good on his promise to sack Joe Torre. DeWitt is also looking for a general manager for the Cardinals after firing Walt Jocketty last week.
