With the biggest sporting event in South African history just days away, it'd take a pretty big scandal to knock the World Cup off the country's front pages—and the country's press has delivered. One of the three wives of polygamous president Jacob Zuma's is pregnant by one of her bodyguards, who committed suicide when the pregnancy became obvious, according to reports in the South African media.

The wife's brothers have admitted that they presented the president with a white goat as apology for an unspecified transgression. Zuma has dismissed the reports—based on an anonymous letter written by "concerned family members"—as malicious gossip. The allegations, true or not, are a major embarrassment for the president as the world's press descends on South Africa, the Christian Science Monitor notes. (More Jacob Zuma stories.)
