UN Slaps New Sanctions on Iran

Measures target Revolutionary Guard, but not oil

(AP) – The UN Security Council has approved new sanctions against Iran over its suspected nuclear program that target the country's powerful Revolutionary Guard, ballistic missiles, and nuclear-related investments. The resolution was approved with 12 "yes" votes, two "no" votes from Brazil and Turkey, and one abstention from Lebanon.

Hillary Clinton has called the sanctions the toughest ever, but they still far short of crippling economic punishments or an embargo on oil shipments, Iran's prime money earner. Says Iran's UN ambassador: "No amount of pressure and mischief will be able to break our nation's determination to pursue and defend its legal and inalienable rights."
