A 1-year-old girl became the fourth Texan child of the year to die inside a hot car on Wednesday, when her mother left her in the driveway for 45 minutes in 91-degree heat. The mother had just returned from picking up her children, police tell the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. A neighbor and other rescuers tried in vain to revive the girl, who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The district attorney will investigate the matter, and child protective services has been contacted. Nationwide, 13 children have died in hot cars this year; last year’s total was 33, with six of them from Texas. (More Texas stories.)
