(Newser) – Tea Party activists are calling for an advertiser boycott of Chris Matthews in the wake of his scathing documentary Rise of the New Right, which they call a “left-wing propaganda hit piece.” The National Tea Party Foundation said Hardball’s advertisers “cannot continue their support of a program that seeks to demonize millions of Americans.”

“The Tea Party movement I know looks nothing like the one portrayed on MSNBC,” one activist told the Huffington Post. “It is made up of good, hardworking, honest, smart people who love their country.” Matthews knew his documentary would ruffle feathers. Before it aired on Wenesday he said, “I think that the left will say, ‘This scares the heck out of me.’” The tea partiers “treat the American government like a foreign occupying force," he said.
