The 27-year-old son of the Dallas police chief is accused of shooting to death a man at a suburban apartment complex yesterday and then, when police responded to the scene, opening fire on them, killing an officer. David Brown Jr., son of Police Chief David Brown, was then shot and killed by the other cops, the Dallas Morning News reports.

The younger Brown was said to have been behaving erratically before the shooting spree, wearing just sunglasses and boxers. The first man killed had just pulled into the complex in his car, with his wife and children, when he was fired on from the driver's side of the car. After the shooting, Brown retrieved a rifle from the trunk of a Dodge Stratus, police said, then got into the Stratus, and attempted to drive away. Blocked by officer Craig Shaw, a five-year veteran, he got into a shootout with Shaw, who was struck and killed by a bullet to the head. (More Dallas stories.)
