Is 'the Boss' Still the Boss?

Posted Oct 12, 07 9:38 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Still reeling from an embarrassing first-round playoff bounce courtesy of Cleveland, the Yankees are wracked with questions about Joe Torre's job security, A-Rod's next contract, and Mariano's future. The biggest question, however, is what George Steinbrenner's role with the team will be. Notably silent in recent years, the old Boss seemed to surface when he threatened to fire Torre, then disappear again when he didn't.

He's said to be conferring with his top executives in Tampa next week before making that call. "He acts now like the chairman of a major corporation, delegating a lot of responsibility," said team president Randy Levine. That's not likely to squelch speculation that he's unwell, a charge denied by a Yankee official, who told the Times, “The Boss is fine, the medication is working.”
