(Newser) – Stanley McChrystal left the White House after a 30-minute meeting with President Obama today—and didn’t return for the big strategy session that followed. There’s still no word on the general’s fate, or on how the meeting went—MSNBC says there’s “an almost complete lockdown on information about the morning’s developments.”

McChrystal met with Robert Gates and Mike Mullen before seeing the president. Beforehand he denied reports that he’d offered to resign, saying, “Come on, you know better than that. No!” But he was expected to be part of today’s strategy meeting, so the no-show is a strong indication that he's out of a job.
