Porn Sites to Get .XXX Suffix

Panel agrees to new suffix for adult entertainment online

(Newser) – Someday soon, .xxx could be bigger than .com in the Internet world. The panel that oversees domain names has agreed to create the .xxx suffix for porn sites on the Web, reports PC World. The move has been long debated, with proponents saying it will help filter such sites from innocent eyes and opponents in the industry worrying about censorship.

A US company called ICM Registry proposed the domain name, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers finally agreed to it today. The addresses won't appear for a while because ICANN must review the specifics of the company's business plan. But with what Reuters estimates to be 370 million porn sites out there, it's sure to be one of largest domain name repositories.

I'm all for a .xxx TLD, so long as it's optional. If they start trying to enforce which sites are allowed on which TLD, the (limited) freedom from censorship we've enjoyed up to now will be a thing of the past.
