A woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after her seemingly loyal cab driver tricked her into trying to hire an undercover police officer to kill her husband. It all started when Veronica Escalona hailed Rachid Rakhis’ cab earlier this month. She told him to follow her estranged husband, who she was convinced was cheating on her. “Call me if you need to do this again,” he recalls telling her. Oh, did she ever.

Escalona tailed her husband all month, racking up over $1,000 in fares. “We would sometimes sit outside his house for an hour or two,” Rakhis tells the New York Post. “I said to myself, ‘This guy is innocent. I’ve never seen him with another woman.’” So when Escalona said she wanted to kill the man, Rakhis thought fast. “I can get that done for you for $2,000,” he offered. Instead, he went to the police. Escalona wound up meeting an undercover cop, who arrested her the moment she paid him. (More weird crimes stories.)
