McCain, Graham Pile on 'Unwise,' 'Inaccurate' Steele
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele speaks at the Rhode Island Republican Party Convention on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 in Cranston, R.I.    (Joe Giblin)

If Michael Steele was hoping his GOP pals on the Sunday airwaves today has his back, let's hope his cable went out. John McCain called Steele's comments about the Afghan war "wildly inaccurate," while Lindsey Graham slammed them as "uninformed, unnecessary, unwise." The Maverick further suggested that Steele take a good look in the mirror and make "an appropriate decision" about whether he can still perform his job, reports the AP. Oy.

  • Jim DeMint called Steele's comments "careless," reports Politico. "Chairman Steele needs to apologize to our military and all of our men and women fighting in Afghanistan."
  • Even independent Joe Lieberman piled on, saying the backlash among Republicans was "heartening."
  • McCain, one of may Republicans calling for Steele to step down, further said Afghanistan is "America's war and we can't afford to fail."
