Filmgoers Ask, Why Did I Get Married?

Posted Oct 14, 07 4:57 PM CDT in Arts & Living US

(Newser) – Black America flocked to Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? this weekend, lifting it to number one with $21.5 million. George Clooney and The Rock bowed to the actor/playwright's fourth effort, as The Game Plan fell to second at $11.5 million and Michael Clayton tied Mark Wahlberg’s We Own the Night at $11 million.

Married was another strong debut for Perry, who beat estimates by $5 million to $10 million. The Los Angeles Times reports that experts underestimate his strong fan base with churches and African American women. Almost 90% of Why Did I Get Married? filmgoers were black, but the percentage of non-black buyers was Perry's biggest yet.
