MySpace to Partner With Skype

Deal will offer MySpace users free online phone calls

Share

(Newser) – Online juggernauts MySpace and Skype will team to connect users of the social networking website to the free online phone call service starting in November. Skype's CEO called the move "an obvious fit," while the New York Times notes the potential crossover—MySpace claims 110 million mostly US-based users, while Skype has 220 million users mostly abroad.

MySpace will add Skype's brand and features to its instant-message software, which it hopes will catch those of Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft. Standard calls will be free, but the two will share revenue from premium features. The deal comes as MySpace strives to outpace rival Facebook.com, which has 47 million users, and is gaining 200,000 per day.

In 20 countries, MySpace users with Skype accounts will be able to phone other Skype users' computers or telephones for free.
