(Newser) – You know you’ve really stepped in it when Eugene Robinson and Pat Buchanan agree that you’re wrong. Chris Matthews was talking about affirmative action with those two on Hardball last night, when he declared, “I think a lot of NBA teams carry white players.” Robinson and Buchanan jump on him, with Robinson crying, “Steve Nash was the MVP three years in a row,” and Buchanan yelling, “Larry Bird got where he was because he was the best!”

The segment soon descended into chuckles, with Robinson saying, "They have to at least be able to shoot." But Dan Fogarty of Sports Grid thinks Matthews has a point. Just look at the 1992 "Dream Team." You can at least argue that John Stockton deserved the nod over Isiah Thomas, but Christian Laettner?
