Documentary 'Meeting Resistance' explores motives of Iraqi fighters

(Newser) – A new documentary features interviews with Iraqi insurgents, all of whom stress the humiliation of US occupation. “Meeting Resistance” will be released this week, but CNN sat in on a preview in Baghdad, where US troops heard tales of citizens turning to violence. "It tells us a lot about the culture and how they pretty much feel about us," one soldier said.

Many of the insurgents talk up the importance of expelling infidels, and one former teacher said his current job is killing Americans. He explained, “a person who doesn’t fight for himself or his country shouldn’t be called a human being.” Said a US officer, "We have to infer what we can from it, but it's useful to try and get some perspective."

(NEWSER) - Eight people, including three lawmakers, were killed and at least 30 wounded when a suicide bomber eluded the normally heavy security around the Green Zone and denonated an explosion in the cafeteria of the Iraqi parliament. (NEWSER) - Insurgents have stormed an Iraqi police station and taken police and officials—including the town’s mayor—hostage. Insurgents poured into the western town’s station disguised as police and opened fire; one insurgent detonated a suicide bomb, officials tell the AP . The officials taken hostage were working in offices on the building’s second floor. The Iraqi Army has surrounded the station in al-Baghdadi, a western town in volatile Anbar province, but it was not immediately clear how many people were being held inside or whether the attackers had made any demands. Car Bomb Kills 37 at Baghdad Funeral

Other attacks kill 3 in Iraq

(AP) - A car bomb ripped through a funeral tent in a mainly Shiite area of Baghdad today, killing at least 37 people, including four children and three women. The car, which exploded around 2pm, had been parked with the vehicles of other mourners, several yards away from the tent, so it wouldn't raise suspicion, police said. Several other cars were set afire and the force of the blast damaged nearby houses. Another 78 were wounded, say police and hospital officials. More»
