Women are more likely to pick out sexy clothes when they’re ovulating, particularly if they think they have competition for potential partners, scientists say. A new study says women subconsciously lean toward the skimpy and seductive if they’re ovulating and see other attractive women nearby. “In order to entice a desirable mate, a woman needs to assess the attractiveness of other women,” says the lead researcher, “to determine how eye-catching she needs to be.”

The study showed women at various stages of their menstrual cycles pictures of other women, then asked them to pick out clothes, the Telegraph explains. Among the ovulating group, those shown the most attractive images of other women picked out the most flattering clothes. Among those not ovulating, the images had no effect. (More women stories.)
