On August 20, it’ll be exactly one year since Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the man convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103, was released from prison, enraging the families of his victims. But a day later, those same families will have something to smile about: The daughter of a victim and the stepson of a Flight 103 widow are getting married that day. “Yes, it’s the anniversary,” bride-to-be Sonia Stratis tells the Daily Beast, “but we can’t let it stop our lives.”

Stratis met her groom, 33-year-old Chris Tedeschi, at a memorial gathering for the Pan Am Flight 103 victims in December 2008. They clicked right away, much to the delight of their parents, who were already friends. “Sometimes God has a way of bringing something good out of something so horrible,” says Stratis. “We’re going to get married, and hopefully have children, so new lives are going to come out of the lives that were lost.” (More Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi stories.)
