SAN FRAN – At approximately 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, the Coast Guard received a mayday broadcast from the 27-foot fishing vessel Ana that took on water, approximately 29 nautical miles west of Pillar Point Harbor. The master of the fishing vessel abandoned ship and boarded a liferaft. The Sea-Land Intrepid, a Maersk Line cargo ship, found both the fishing boat and liferaft. It stayed on scene for 15 minutes until the Coast Guard's small boat arrived and rescued the fisherman from the liferaft.
The quick response of the Coast Guard was aided by the fisherman’s distress call, which identified the vessel, its position and type of distress, and the Rescue 21 program. The Rescue 21 program uses direction finding equipment to find the location of a distress call when it is made over VHF radio. Read the full article.
