• "Obama had a simple message for Republicans: Game on," writes Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post . What on the surface was a typical post-partisan Obama speech was actually full of populist challenges to Republicans. "This is Obama version 2.0: Harder, more cynical but perhaps also more effective."

He wants to shift focus from ground troops to 'irregular warfare'

(NEWSER) - President Obama officially unveiled his plan for a slimmed-down military with a speech at the Pentagon today, promising that budget cuts and a reduction in conventional ground forces wouldn't harm the nation's security. Pundits from left and right generally praise address

(NEWSER) - Pundits handed out good grades aplenty for President Obama's new jobs proposal last night, with generally positive feedback from liberals like Paul Krugman—but also from conservatives like David Frum and Andrew Sullivan.

• Krugman writes in the New York Times that he was "favorably surprised by the new Obama jobs plan, which is significantly bolder and better than I expected." Still, "it's not nearly as bold as the plan I’d want in an ideal world. But if it actually became law, it would probably make a significant dent in unemployment." Of course, Krugman holds out little hope that the GOP will let it pass.

In latest speech, president promises to work all weekend long

(NEWSER) - In his latest debt limit speech, President Obama today urged Democrats and Republicans to come up with "a plan that I can sign by Tuesday"—a plan that has support in both parties. "There are plenty of ways out of this mess," he said, but any solution must be bipartisan. He reminded his audience that the debt ceiling does not raise spending, but simply allows the US to pay the bills Congress has already authorized. More»
