Lawsuit to iPhones: You're Toxic

(Newser) – A California environmental group has announced it's filing a lawsuit against Apple's popular iPhone, demanding the company eliminate "dangerous" toxic chemicals from the gadgets or include a warning label on the product as required by state law. At issue are phthalates, suspected of causing birth defects, that are used to make iPhone cables more flexible.

"There is no reason to have these chemicals in iPhones," said a spokesman for California's Center for Environmental Health. The phones have also tested positive for lead, chromium, chlorine linked to PVC, and bromine and antimony, which are used in flame retardants. Apple, headquartered in California, has promised that both PVC and flame retardants would be banned from all new products by the end of next year.

(AP) - Apple's results trumped expectations for yet another quarter, the results lifted by the sale of 20.3 million iPhones—millions more than analysts expected; iPad sales came in at 9.25 million units, also above expectations. In other product categories, trends were less impressive. Sales of Mac computers were 3.95 million, up 14% from a year ago. That's the lowest quarterly growth rate in two years. (NEWSER) - Steve Jobs took a break from his medical leave to show off some major new Apple software today, including its hotly anticipated new cloud computing service. Files suit for smartphone, computer patent violations

(NEWSER) - After Apple launched a trademark lawsuit against Samsung, it’s the South Korean firm’s turn to sue. Samsung is suing Apple in Seoul, Tokyo, and Germany over patent violations, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Korean tech company says Apple—one of its leading buyers of chips and other tech components—has infringed on its patents for energy-efficient data transmission, 3G technology that shaves down the number of data-transmission errors, and a means for using a phone to provide a PC with a wireless connection.
