The so-called "Jump Up Boys" apparently operated like a squad within a squad, with members believed to sport similar tattoos and cheer on aggressive policing, investigators believe. Officials were alerted to the existence of the Jump Up Boys when a supervisor found a pamphlet for the crew that lauded shootings by cops, reports the Los Angeles Times. Security camera confusion leads to hilarious pursuit

(NEWSER) - For 20 minutes, an undercover British police officer intrepidly tracked a suspicious person in an area recently hit with a spate of burglaries. Unfortunately, the officer was chasing himself. How? An operator watching the street via security camera alerted the plain-clothes officer of a suspicious person in the area—not realizing it was, in fact, the cop, explains the Telegraph . The camera operator began relaying the whereabouts of the "suspect" so the officer could nab him. More»

Occupy LA Cost City $2.35M

Protesters blame costs on excessive use of cops

(NEWSER) - Occupy LA protesters cost the city a cool $2.35 million—at least—largely in police overtime. The price tag doesn't include the costs of repairs to the lawn during the two-month encampment and the fountain outside City Hall. Time-and-a half overtime for the regular force and General Services cops who patrol parks cost the city a total of just over $1.5 million. As much as $1.7 million of the total costs will be added to the city's expected $72 million debt, reports the Los Angeles Times . The rest will be covered by standard operating costs. By comparison, the 2009 Michael Jackson single-day memorial service at the Staples Center cost the city $3.2 million. More»

John Atterberry, 40, had been a vice president of Death Row Records, then home to Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre, before going on to work with artists including Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, and Michael Jackson, the Los Angeles Times reports.
