Tadeusz Sawicz earned high military honors for bravery

(NEWSER) - A Polish fighter pilot believed to have been the last of those who fought alongside the English to stop Hitler's advance in the Battle of Britain has died at 97, reports the New York Daily News . After the Nazis took over his homeland in 1939, Tadeusz Sawicz made his way to France, where he fought until Paris fell; he then took up the fight in Britain in July 1940, just as the Luftwaffe began its three-month-long failed assault on England. Some 17,000 Polish pilots, mechanics, and ground staff fought for Britain, leading Winston Churchill to say of the decisive victory, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Pemper was secretary for the commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp, a brutal Nazi who personally executed hundreds; believing the position to be a death sentence, Pemper started plotting against him. (NEWSER) - Meet the real Rosie the Riveter. The woman who inspired the "We Can Do It!" poster during World War II that was embraced as a feminist symbol in the 1980s is dead at age 86, reports the New York Times . Geraldine Hoff Doyle was working in a Michigan factory in 1942 when a UPI photographer took her photo. The image became the inspiration for the subsequent poster—which Doyle didn't know until she recognized herself in a magazine in 1982. More»

Getting shot down in Pacific shaped Fred Hargesheime's whole life

(NEWSER) - Shot down by a Japanese fighter in 1943, a young US pilot landed in the jungle of a Japanese-held island. He survived, barely, for a month before fate and Pacific islanders found him, nursed him back to health in secret, and eventually got him back in American hands. Fred Hargesheimer, who died this morning at 94, never forgot the kindness of his rescuers and leaves a legacy of schools, libraries, and years of teaching on the island of New Britain, reports the AP.
