(AP) - Three large blasts have struck a hotel and restaurant district popular with Western journalists and businessmen along the Tigris River in Baghdad. At least 31 people have been killed and scores more wounded. The first blast struck at about 3:40pm, near the Sheraton Hotel, just across the Tigris River from the Green Zone, destroying concrete blast walls protecting the site. (AP) - A bomb tore through a busy square in Baghdad at midday today, killing at least 18 people and wounding 25, the AP reports. Iraqi police said the blast in a northern Baghdad Shiite neighborhood was a parked car bomb, apparently targeting a taxi stand. Some 60 miles south of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded as an Iraqi soldier and two others were trying to defuse it; all three were killed. More»

City sees dramatic improvement in security from a year ago

(NEWSER) - US and Iraqi forces have secured 75% of Baghdad's neighborhoods, a sharp increase from pre-surge days, USA Today reports. The combined forces "basically own the streets," said a US colonel. Military figures say that 356 of 474 of the city's neighborhoods have returned to some semblance of normalcy, with violence all but eliminated and economic activity returning. A year ago, fewer than 40 of those neighborhoods were deemed secure. More»

Iraqi Civilian Deaths Spike in August

Almost half the 1,809 casualties killed in a single day

(NEWSER) - August was the second deadliest month for Iraqi civilians since the US troop surge began, the AP reports, with almost half the deaths occurring on just one disastrous day. At least 1,809 Iraqis were killed last month, compared to 2,100 in December, just before the surge began. On August 14, four suicide bombings killed 520 people in the war’s single deadliest day.
