(Newser) – Typhoon Mitag is racing for the eastern Philippines as officials continue to evacuate almost 200,000 people, the AP reports. (NEWSER) - Tropical Storm Washi blew past the Philippines today, leaving heartbreak in its wake. The death toll now sits at 652—mostly women and children—with another 900 missing, according to the local Red Cross. Another 45,000 people have been displaced in the coastal cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, reports the AP . "It's overwhelming. We didn't expect" so many dead, says the head of the country's disaster-response agency, adding that authorities are continuing to find bodies floating at sea. More»

(AP) - Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was arrested in her hospital room on electoral fraud charges today, in a high-profile tug of war set off by her attempts to leave the country, ostensibly for medical treatment. In a drama that has galvanized the Philippines, Arroyo, 64, sitting in a wheelchair and wearing a head and neck brace, was turned back Tuesday night from boarding a flight out of Manila. Typhoon Kills 10 in Philippines

Expected to hit Taiwan tomorrow

(AP) - Typhoon Nanmadol began blowing toward Taiwan today after leaving at least 10 people dead and scuttling a visit by a US Navy carrier group in the Philippines, officials said. Taiwan issued sea and land warnings and planned to evacuate about 6,000 people in its eastern and southern regions as it braced for the typhoon. Troops and rescue equipment were deployed, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said. Nanmadol had sustained wind of 121mph and gusts of 143mph Friday, becoming the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines so far this year. More»
