(NEWSER) - USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship, arrived in Bangladesh today loaded with potable water, food, and medical supplies for some of the 2 million Bengalis displaced by Cyclone Sidr. (NEWSER) - An “SOS” note scrawled in the sand actually worked for two stranded women in Hawaii. A tour helicopter noticed the letters and notified naval aviators who were training nearby; they saw the inscription and flashes from a mirror and sent a helicopter and swimmer to pick up the stranded pair, one of whom was ill and injured, the AP reports. One of 30 people rescued from Christchurch office building

(NEWSER) - After being trapped for 24 hours, a woman was pulled from the rubble of the Pyne Gould Corp. building in Christchurch today, a rare bright spot on a dark day in New Zealand. Ann Bodkin had taken cover under her desk during yesterday’s 6.3-magnitude earthquake, and “the sun came out the moment she was removed from the building,” says Christchurch’s mayor. “It was like God tuned on the lights.” Bodkin was one of about 30 people rescued from that building and the Canterbury Television building today, CNN reports. China Death Toll Nears 40,000

Foreign medical workers arrive as focus shifts toward aiding survivors

(NEWSER) - The official quake death toll climbed to nearly 40,000 in China’s Sichuan province today, the Guardian reports, as foreign medical teams and equipment arrived on the scene. Relief efforts began shifting away from finding survivors to aiding the more than 200,000 injured and 5 million left homeless. Russia, Taiwan, Japan, the US, Germany, and Italy had all sent rescue workers. More»

Junta Leader Visits Nargis Victims as UN Envoy Arrives

General meets survivors for first time since cyclone hit

(NEWSER) - The head of Burma's junta emerged today for the first time since cyclone Nargis struck two weeks ago to meet with survivors, CNN reports. Gen. Than Shwe visited a refugee camp 200 miles south of Yangon, touching the faces of infant survivors. The visit came as the UN's humanitarian secretary began a three-day tour meant to pressure Burma to accept more foreign aid, the AP reports. More»
