(NEWSER) - Mohamed Merah's video of his killing spree will not see the light of day, at least not by way of al-Jazeera. The network announced that the video neither provided any fresh info nor met al-Jazeera's code of ethics for broadcast. It revealed that Merah's face was never shown in the video, and he made no statement in it. Nicolas Sarkozy earlier warned al-Jazeera and all other media to not even think about airing the footage "out of respect for the victims and for France." More»

Mohamed Merah dead after 32-hour standoff

(NEWSER) - After a standoff of more than 32 hours, French shooting-spree suspect Mohamed Merah is dead, the AP reports. A police official confirms that Merah's death was announced today on police radio after five minutes of gunfire were heard; the French interior minister says Merah died after police entered his apartment and he shot at them, then jumped out the window with his weapon in his hand. Sky News reports that Merah was shooting "wildly" at officers as he jumped; at least two were injured in the standoff. More»

(NEWSER) - Conflicting reports out of Toulouse: Though USA Today reported earlier, by way of French TV , that a 24-year-old Muslim man suspected in a series of shootings had been arrested after a raid on an apartment, reports are now saying the building remains surrounded. CNN and Reuters report that some 300 police officers have ringed the building and are trying to draw Mohammad Merah out. After severing communication in late morning, he is apparently talking with police once again. More»

Sarkozy says riot police will secure region until 'this criminal' is caught

(AP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy says authorities are raising the terrorism alert to its highest level across a swath of southern France where a gunman opened fire on a Jewish school before fleeing. Sarkozy said today's attack in Toulouse , which killed three children and a rabbi, was the worst-ever school shooting in France. One of the weapons used today was the same used to kill three paratroopers in two different attacks in the Toulouse region last week. Sarkozy suggested one person was behind all three attacks. More»
