(NEWSER) - The city that never sleeps will be a little less bright through Nov. 1, as buildings hit the lights to protect migrating birds. An estimated 90,000 birds die each year by slamming into buildings in NYC alone; turning lights off can reduce that number by 83%, according to one study. The Empire State and Chrysler buildings have jumped aboard the "lights out" program, run by NYC Audubon, and will turn off their lights from midnight to dawn during the autumn migration, notes the BBC . (NEWSER) - The Empire State Building is getting a makeover to reduce its King Kong-sized carbon footprint, NY1 reports. As part of a larger renovation, "green" improvements will be made to the 78-year-old building—including an update for all 6500 of the structure’s windows—to reduce its energy consumption by 38%. Freedom Tower Now NYC's Tallest ... Sort Of

Unless you count the Empire State Building's needle

(NEWSER) - It’s a momentous day in New York today: The World Trade Center is once again the city's tallest structure. The skeleton of the still-under-construction "Freedom Tower" will today surpass 1,250 feet, the AP reports, making it just a hair higher than the Empire State Building. But the title comes with something of an asterisk, because if you count the Empire State Building's antenna, that building is still taller, at 1,454 feet. More»

World Financial Center Evacuated for Toy Grenade

(NEWSER) - The World Financial Center tower was evacuated today, over something that was at least kinda designed to look explosive. A private security guard noticed something that looked suspiciously like a grenade while X-raying a package that had come in by mail, and cleared the entire 44-story building, police tell NBC New York . But the package turned out to be a toy grenade mounted to a plaque with the inscription, "Complaint Dept. Pull Pin." More»

Noose Discovered at 1 World Trade Center

Police launch hate crime investigation

(NEWSER) - Port Authority police launched a hate crime investigation after construction workers returning from their Christmas break found a noose hanging from the 64th floor of 1 World Trade Center. It's not clear whether there had been any tension among workers at the skyscraper formerly known as Freedom Tower, the New York Daily News notes. The department "places the highest priority on crimes motivated by hate and bias,” police said in a statement. “We believe aggressive enforcement action sends a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated."
