Russia: US May Have Killed Probe

Expert calls suggestion that US radar station interfered 'contrived'

(NEWSER) - Russia's failed Mars moon probe may be sleeping with the fishes , but the questions about what went wrong with the Phobos-Grunt have yet to be put to rest. The newest theory: the US did it, inadvertently, of course. Russia is reviewing whether emissions from a US radar station may have affected the probe, which never made it past Earth's orbit. "The results of the experiment will allow us to prove or dismiss the possibility of the radar's impact," explains the head of the commission looking into the failure. Russian Space Probe to Hit Earth in Hours

Failed Phobos-Grunt spacecraft will likely miss Russia, US

(AP) - A failed Russian probe designed to travel to a moon of Mars but stuck in Earth's orbit will come crashing down within hours, the Russian space agency said today. Roscosmos said the unmanned Phobos-Grunt will crash between 11:41am and 4:05pm EST. It could crash anywhere along the route of its next few orbits, which would include Europe, southeast Asia, Australia, and South America. The United States, Canada, and much of Russia are outside the risk zone. More»

It joins Earth and Mars

(NEWSER) - Venus has joined Earth and Mars in the ozone layer club. A spacecraft from the European Space Agency detected a thin layer about 60 miles above the planet, reports the BBC . Ozone protects Earth from the sun's ultraviolet rays, and astronomers say the discovery could help fine-tune their hunt for life on other planets. More»
