Historic offering will get government some money back

(AP) - General Motors says its common stock will sell for $33 per share when its initial public offering takes place tomorrow. The IPO, one of the largest in history, brings the US government closer to getting back part of the $50 billion it gave GM last year. The government will sell 412 million shares and get $13.6 billion, leaving it with about 500 million shares, or about 33% of GM. It would have to sell them for $53 a share, or $26.4 billion, for taxpayers to get back their $50 billion back. More»

GM to Restore About 600 Dealerships

Half of those that appealed will be allowed to stay open

(NEWSER) - About 600 GM dealerships are getting a second life. Of the 1,160 dealers who appealed orders to shut down as part of bankruptcy proceedings, approximately half will be allowed to stay open. But one dealer tells the Detroit News that it's no cause for celebration until the conditions are made clear, possibly as soon as today. More»

Sale of gas-guzzling brand falls through

(NEWSER) - The once-mighty Hummer is going away for good. GM has begun winding down the brand after a sale to a Chinese company fell through. It's the second brand, along with Saturn, that GM has failed to sell as part of its restructuring. Only about 2,500 Hummers remain in stock, and the company will honor warranties for vehicles still on the road. More»

GM to Repay Bailout Early, Posts (Smaller) $1.2B Loss

Auto giant speeds $1.2B per quarter repayment sked

(NEWSER) - General Motors will start repaying its $6.7 billion debt to the US and Canadian governments early, with $1.2 billion quarterly payments beginning next month, reports the Detroit News . The accelerated repayment plan is a strong indication that finances are looking up for the troubled automaker, which today posted a $1.2 billion loss in its first quarterly report since leaving bankruptcy in July—far better than anticipated in what the AP notes is a sign the automaker's turning around.
