(NEWSER) - Iranians have been inspired by the successful revolts in Egypt and Tunisia, but a diplomat who defected last month warns that Iran's regime is a much more brutal one. Iran would "slaughter" rebels rather than cede control, says Ahmed Maleki, who served as vice consul in Iran's Milan consulate before fleeing to Paris. Maleki is one of a string of officials who have defected to join the Green Wave opposition group, formed last year; he says others are waiting for the right time to defect. More»

US Might Allow Iran Some Uranium Enrichment

Concession would come in exchange for increased inspections

(NEWSER) - Iran might be allowed to continue enriching uranium up to 5% purity, the high end of civilian usage, if it allows unrestricted inspections and strong supervision of its nuclear program, reports the LA Times . The deal would be a major concession by the United Nations and United States, and Iran has shown little willingness in the past to cooperate with the international community, but arms control experts increasingly believe it is a more realistic deal than the complete shuttering of all nuclear enrichment in Iran. Amir Mirzai Hekmati's case wasn't 'complete': high court

(NEWSER) - Iran's Supreme Court judges have overturned an American's death sentence for alleged spying , saying that his case was "not complete." The high court has handed Amir Mirzai Hekmati's case to an affiliate court, the BBC reports. Hekmati was convicted of "co-operating with a hostile nation, membership of the CIA, and trying to implicate Iran in terrorism" in January; the US says it's "simply not true" that the Iranian-American national worked with the intelligence agency. Iran Blocks UN Inspectors

Nuclear watchdog barred from key site

(NEWSER) - The UN's nuclear watchdog is walking away from its visit to Iran after being prevented from visiting a key military site and clarifying "possible military dimensions" of Iran's nuclear program. An International Atomic Energy Agency team was refused permission to inspect the Parchin site south of Tehran, where it suspects explosives related to nuclear weapons have been tested, the BBC reports.
