(NEWSER) - The US has complained mightily over the charges Egypt has reportedly filed against 43 workers for pro-democracy non-governmental organizations, which is pretty ironic, Marlene Spoerri of the Christian Science Monitor points out, because "these organizations are conducting work that would never be tolerated in the US." The slightest whiff of foreign interference with US campaigns always sends America into an uproar—in 1996 for example, rumors that Chinese authorities were financing the Democratic National Committee led to congressional investigations and 22 fraud convictions. Egypt Snubs US, Raids Pro-Democracy Groups

Three US-funded agencies are among the targets

(NEWSER) - Egypt's ruling military council doesn't appear to be cowed by pressure from the US and the rest of the world into speeding up reforms. Security forces raided 17 nongovernmental offices today, including three funded by the US that do things like monitor elections and promote democracy. The US is demanding answers and warning that it will review the $1.3 billion in annual aid it gives to the military, reports Reuters . More»

Sam LaHood Talks 'de Facto Detention' in Egypt

Gives first TV interview since returning to US

(NEWSER) - Sam LaHood today discussed his "de facto detention" in Egypt, in his first TV interview since returning to the US Thursday, Politico reports. LaHood, who had been barred from leaving Egypt along with 42 other NGO employees, says their attorney compared the circumstances "to a hostage situation." The employees still face criminal charges in Egypt, and LaHood tells CNN he expects the trial against them "to go on for some time" in that country. More»

Egypt Allows Arrested Americans to Travel Again

Case involving transportation chief Lahood's son is apparently dropped

(NEWSER) - It looks like a thorny problem between the US and Egypt—one involving the son of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood—is going away. Egyptian officials today lifted a travel ban on seven Americans, including Sam LaHood , who are facing trial in the country, reports the AP . They are among 43 employees of pro-democracy groups from various nations who were arrested and accused by Egypt's military leaders of trying to stir up unrest. More»
