(NEWSER) - An Afghan investigative chief is frustrated he was not allowed to question the US serviceman charged in the shooting rampage that left 17 Afghan men, women, and children dead. General Sher Mohammed Karimi said he was never allowed to speak to Staff Sergeant Robert Bales before he was whisked off to the US for trial there, reports CBS . "This is all I wanted, to be able to just ask him who you are, why you did it, and what were the weapons that you used, what was the reason for killing children and women?" Karimi noted. He said US military officials explained that Americans accused of a crime are allowed to have a lawyer and have the option of not talking to anyone else. (NEWSER) - US officials are bracing for protests in Afghanistan in the wake of the publication of gruesome photos taken by a renegade "Kill Team" of American soldiers posing with a civilian corpse. Twelve members of the group face court martial charges linked to civilian murders. Three of some 4,000 images that are part of the case were published by Der Spiegel . One features a grinning soldier posing over the corpse of the son of a farmer presumably just killed. 'Crazy' Sergeant Urged US Troops to 'Kill for Sport'

Army ignored warning about death squad team leader, say soldier's parents

(NEWSER) - Soldiers charged with murdering Afghan civilians for kicks are blaming a "crazy" sergeant that the parents of one said they warned the Army about. In a chilling videotaped interrogation, Corporal Jeremy Morlock recounts being ordered to kill civilians during heroin-, opium-, and hash-fueled raids. At one point, Sergeant Calvin Gibbs tossed a grenade at an unarmed civilian and ordered: "Wax this guy," Morlock recalled. "Gibbs had pure hatred for all Afghans and constantly referred to them as savages," he added in a statement . New Yorker Was 'Ready to Deliver Suicide Bomb'

His terrorist handler told him he needed more religious instruction

(NEWSER) - A Queens man who pleaded guilty to aiding al-Qaeda was ready and willing to deliver a suicide bomb for the terrorist organization, he revealed to investigators. His handlers told 26-year-old Bryant Neal Vinas, however, that he needed more "religious" training before he could carry out such a mission, he told officials in Belgium, where he is being held. (NEWSER) - Critics are blasting a new law in Afghanistan that forbids a woman to refuse sex with her husband or to leave home without his permission, reports the Guardian. The law, opposed by the UN, is viewed as a major step backward for women in a nation whose constitution supports equal rights.
