Good numbers from consumers make for bullish afternoon

(NEWSER) - The markets retreated today, battered by the familiar convergence of high oil prices and poor business performance, MarketWatch reports. Amid signs of broader malaise, financials dropped, and crude again topped $135 per barrel. The Dow fell 131.24 to close at 12,029.06. (NEWSER) - The major indexes saw small gains today despite turmoil in the financial sector and skepticism about a positive jobs report. The Dow climbed 27.23 points to 13,595.10, the Nasdaq added 15.55 to close at 2,810.38, and the S&P 500 gained 1.21 to 1,509.65. S&P 500, Nasdaq also rise

(NEWSER) - Markets are up, at least for now: The Dow was up more than 100 points at open, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq following suit, up about 11 and 13 points, respectively, MarketWatch reports. An upbeat report on retail sales no doubt prodded stocks upward: July sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.5%, their biggest gain in four months. Currently the Dow is hovering in the 11,200 range.
