(NEWSER) - Past or present drug use doesn't seem to damage middle-aged brains, a new study finds. British researchers studied the mental sharpness of thousands of 50-year-old subjects, and found that those who had used illicit drugs—mainly marijuana—actually performed better than others on tests of memory and other brain functions, Reuters reports. Around a quarter of test subjects said they had taken drugs at some point in their lives; 6% were still using drugs in their 40s. More»

Winehouse Wrote Entire Third Album

But only 2 songs were recorded, producer says

(NEWSER) - Amy Winehouse had written an entire album of songs before her death but sadly for the late singer's fans, most of it exists only on paper. The album would have been her third, but she was in no rush to release new material, says music producer Salaam Remi, who worked on Winehouse's albums Frank and Back to Black. Instead, she planned to record a jazz album with a "supergroup" including Questlove of the Roots, Remi says. More»

(NEWSER) - Sobering news for those who argue that legalizing medical marijuana will lead to more stoner kids: Researchers reviewed the habits of some 25,000 youths in Massachusetts, where medical pot isn’t legal, and 13,000 in Rhode Island, where it became so in 2006. Studying data from 1997 to 2009, they found that no matter the state or the year, about 30% of the youngsters indulged in the drug, Time reports. More»

It's Official: Alcohol Killed Winehouse

Coroner rules it 'death by misadventure'

(NEWSER) - It wasn’t a lack of alcohol , but alcohol itself that killed Amy Winehouse. A coroner has determined that Winehouse consumed a “potentially fatal” amount of alcohol the night she died, and ruled it a “death by misadventure,” the AP reports. A pathologist says Winehouse drank a “very large quantity of alcohol” and was five times over the drunk-driving limit. Her doctor says the singer had started drinking again, after abstaining for a while, just days before her death. More»
