But that may be because passengers left the scene without letting officials know, the AP reports. As the truck plowed into the train, two truck drivers watched helplessly from behind. The warning gates and lights were functioning, but for some reason the lead truck did not stop; authorities are still searching for clues as to why not. Passenger train jumps tracks, slams into second train

(NEWSER) - At least 70 people were killed early today when a high-speed passenger train traveling from Beijing jumped the tracks and slammed into another train, AFP reports. Some 250 injured were pulled from the mangled wreckage in the city of Zibo in Shandong province. Officials discounted terrorism and blamed human error for the crash, the worst in China in a decade, but did not elaborate. Two railroad officials were fired shortly after the accident. More»

Protests supporting sacked chief justice turn violent

(NEWSER) - Police in Pakistan fired tear gas at a rally of about 100 lawyers in Karachi as the country's deposed chief justice, still under house arrest, roused supporters across the country on a smuggled mobile phone, calling for the incoming government to reinstate him and his colleagues. The justice, whom President Pervez Musharraf sacked during the state of emergency, told lawyers: "Victory is not far off now." More»

Musharraf vows to leave military as emergency rule continues

(NEWSER) - Pakistan answered worldwide criticism of its military rule today by vowing to hold national elections in January, Reuters reports. "We don't want to disrupt the election process. We want a free election," the PM said. President Pervez Musharraf also promised to leave the military “once we correct these pillars in judiciary and the executive and the parliament.” More»

Derailment claims lives of 3 railway workers

(NEWSER) - Two locomotive engineers and a trainee were killed when a train derailed in Burlington, Ontario. Another railway worker and 45 passengers were injured when the train, headed to Toronto from Niagara Falls, came off the rails in an industrial district, the Toronto Star reports. The accident happened in good weather on a straight stretch of track and investigators say it could take a long time to establish the cause. More»
