'Into the Wild' Grabs SAG Nominations

Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, 'The Hangover' failed to score today

(NEWSER) - Sure, we all could have predicted Avatar would clean up and Sandra Bullock's ascendance would continue come Oscar nomination time. But who were today's notable snubs? Us offers a list:

• Brad Pitt: Failed to score a Best Actor nomination for his critically acclaimed, SAG-nominated role in Inglourious Basterds.
• Daniel Day-Lewis: Also missing from the Best Actor category, though he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his turn in Nine.

But if you like the style and the stars, then just eat the ice cream

(NEWSER) - Critics agree: Nine is no 8½. Some enjoy a star-studded song-and-dance, but most don't like the song part, and they find the stars misused at best. Some opinions:

• "Step right up, pay $10, and you can see eight superstars, six of whom have won Oscars, singing songs in sparkly costumes." If that sounds good, cautions Dana Stevens of Slate , know that "the songs range from mediocre to actively unlistenable and that few of these actors know how to put over a song."

Up in the Air also scores three Screen Actors Guild nominations

(NEWSER) - Award-season frontrunners Inglourious Basterds, Precious, and Up in the Air led today’s Screen Actors Guild nominations with three apiece. Included in those nominations for Basterds and Precious is a nod for outstanding performance by a motion picture cast—SAG’s answer to the typical “best picture” category. Other films nominated in that category are An Education, The Hurt Locker, and Nine. The leading TV shows also received three nominations each: 30 Rock, The Closer, and Dexter. More»

(NEWSER) - Howard Stern is making waves today for filling out his Screen Actors Guild nominations during his morning radio show—and explaining that his votes are going almost exclusively to actors who appeared on his show. “I'm going to take this seriously and reward our friends. (AP) - Meryl Streep and Sean Penn took lead-acting honors tonight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, she for Doubt and he for Milk. The prize for overall cast went to the rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire, while Heath Ledger and Kate Winslet took supporting honors for The Dark Knight and The Reader. 30 Rock swept the TV comedy honors; Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin took the individual acting prizes, and the show won the ensemble cast award.
