(NEWSER) - Three people were killed by police fire today in Egypt, in the second day of protests over Wednesday's bloody soccer riot in Port Said . (NEWSER) - A massive riot broke out after a soccer match in Port Said, Egypt, today, leaving at least 73 people dead and hundreds more injured. The violence erupted after the home team, al-Masry, managed a 3-1 win against the favored al-Ahly, Egypt's top team, Voice of America reports. Al-Masry fans swarmed the field, hurling rocks, fireworks, and bottles and, according to one report, wielding knives, chasing al-Ahly players from the field. More»

More than 5,000 arrested in China, Singapore, Thailand

(NEWSER) - Illegal gambling dens across Asia are being rolled up in a post-World Cup crackdown. Police in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore have found almost 800 illegal gambling dens, arrested more than 5,000 people, and seized almost $10 million in bets, the BBC reports . The establishments handled more than $155 million in bets during the tournament, according to Interpol. The international police force is still investigating to see if all that action actually influenced the games. More»

(NEWSER) - The referees for Saturday’s US/England World Cup match have specifically brushed up on English profanity in an effort to crack down on foul language. In a move sure to terrify Wayne Rooney, Brazilian referee Carlos Eugenio Simon has had his team memorize 20 curse words. “We can’t do this in 11 different languages, but at least we have to know the swear words in English,” one assistant tells the Times . Fired ref fights back against soccer authorities

(NEWSER) - A Turkish referee is kicking back against soccer authorities who fired him for being gay, the Independent reports. After the authorities leaked his name to the press, Halil Dincdag "outed" himself on a TV sports show, despite discrimination against gays in Turkey. Dincdag has won the support of many of his fellow referees, and is taking the football federation to court to get back his referee's license. More»
