Government allows memorials for the first time

(NEWSER) - As part of its campaign to attract Western visitors to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China allowed Tiananmen Square memorials this year for the first time since the protests of June 4, 1989. The government maintains that the uprising was a counterrevolutionary riot and refuses to release details; a security crackdown in the square normally prevents citizens from commemorating the event. China's capital seeks to clean up bathrooms

(NEWSER) - The Chinese government is implementing new rules to spruce up its capital city's notoriously dirty public bathrooms. The weirdest of the bunch: a toilet in Beijing can be home to a maximum of two flies, reports the BBC . It's not clear how rigidly the measures will be enforced, but the idea apparently is to make restrooms in tourist areas a little less unpleasant. More»

Chen Guangcheng taken to Beijing hospital

(NEWSER) - Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng has left the US Embassy in Beijing "of his own volition" after taking refuge there for six days, according to state media. Chen—who escaped from house arrest last month —traveled with US Ambassador Gary Locke to a Beijing hospital, reports the Washington Post . American officials say Chen will receive medical treatment and be reunited with his family. Hillary Clinton arrived in Beijing hours earlier but it's not clear whether she was involved in Chen's departure. More»
